Description
Time Warp through San Diego’s Past
The University Heights Historical Neon Sign at twilight with traffic long exposure light trails; San Diego, California; USA. Taken 13 April 2017.
Continuing with my mini-project of photographing historic neon signs around various neighborhoods in San Diego, the University Heights sign harks back to the days when streetcars ran through to the Old Trolley Barn Park.
University Heights is a neighborhood in central San Diego, but oddly enough there is no university located within its boundaries. The name “University” comes from a plan in the 1880s to build a university in the area. That never happened and the school they had in mind became what is now San Diego State University (my alma mater), located a couple of miles away.
The neighborhood’s street sign, erected in 1997, references the old streetcars line that once ran along Park Boulevard and the ostriches atop each pillar pays homage to an ostrich farm that once was located nearby.
Once again proving that photography can be dangerous to one’s well being, I stood in the center turning lane to get this long exposure shot while traffic from both directions were speeding by.
Maybe it is time to invest in a drone!
