Recently Balboa Park has undergone a major renovation to prepare for the centennial celebration of the Panama-California Exposition that the park hosted in 1915 and 1916 to honor the completion of the Panama Canal. It was that exposition that put San Diego on the map (at the time the population of San Diego was only 40,000 as opposed to San Francisco�s 420,000) and established Balboa Park as a treasured landmark.
The Botanical Building is one of the most photographed subjects in San Diego and I have taken my fair share of this iconic building over the years. The only problem has been too many people in the frame, dirty water, pond water drained, a fence around the pond, bad lighting on the building, bad weather, etc. With the centennial celebration underway the new and improved Balboa Park looks so much better that I was finally able to make this photograph.
